Baby P’s mother has become friends with a fellow criminal who killed her three-year-old daughter. Tracey Connelly, 41, befriended Helen Caudwell, a woman who suffocated her daughter with a Piglet pyjama case before attempting suicide, at the hostel she shares with other former prisoners. The two are staying at a taxpayer-funded hostel in northern England, where Connelly was pictured out shopping this weekend wearing a mask and hood.
A source told the Daily Mirror that Connelly rarely leaves her accommodation, as she prefers “lounging around”.
Caudwell is one of several other former prisoner inmates living at the hostel.
She is out of prison on licence, meaning she is required to follow conditions while released.
The women are “always talking to each other” at their accommodation, the source said.
Connelly’s new friend was jailed for life in 2010 and ordered to serve a minimum of eight years for the murder of her daughter Bethany.
The 54-year-old killed her daughter while attempting to prevent her estranged ex-husband from having contact.
Caudwell and Connelly live with other convicted criminals who are “normal girls” sharing the residence “along with child killers”.
They are proving less friendly towards Connelly, the source added.

They said a “couple of girls” have been asked “not to bully” her, on threat of “being recalled to prison”.
The source told the Mirror the other women “just have to accept it”.
When she isn’t at home Connelly leaves wearing a mask or “puts her hood up”, while officials keep tabs on her.
The source said: “If Tracey does go out, she wears a mask or puts her hood up. She’s on a tag.”
Connelly was released from jail in 2022 after serving a sentence for admitting to causing or allowing the death of her 17-month-old son Peter, known as Baby P.
She was jailed for a minimum of five years in 2009 and first released in 2013, but recalled to prison in 2015 for breaching her parole conditions.
Connelly was released with 20 licence conditions, including wearing a tag and having to declare new relationships.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice told the Mirror the department does “not comment on individuals”.
