Australians seek Bank Holiday to celebrate King Charles's Coronation

Austalians could be set to get an extra Bank Holiday for the King’s Coronation. Despite Republican fears, West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has revealed they’ll “consider” the request, due to it being an “historic occasion”. Like Australia, New Zealand and Canada also currently have no specific plans for an additional Bank Holiday.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be at the King’s Coronation this spring at Westminster Abbey among the global dignitaries.

Mr McGowan also recently revealed that Western Australia’s Governor Chris Dawson would be at the Coronation.

The fereral government has yet to outline if there will be Coronation Day public holiday, however, a spokesperson said the government has not completely ruled it out.

The King’s Coronation is to take place in London at Westminster Abbey, the same venue used for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation in 1953.

He added he was “pleased” to announce there will be an additional Bank Holiday for the “whole of the United Kingdom next year”.

He explained he is “looking forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

When the King’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned in 1953, Australians got a public holiday in celebration.

A petition for an extra bank holiday launched following confirmation the King is not set to appear on the nation’s new $5 bank notes.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has not set a date for the new currency.

It did, however, confirm King Charles would not be on it after “consultation with the Australian government, which supports this change”.

In response to the news, the BBC’s former royal correspondent Peter Hunt hinted that Charles could be ditched as Australia’s Head of State by tweeting, “So it begins. Slowly”.
