Asda's £4 sunscreen beats £22 premium product in tests

A cheap supermarket own-brand sunscreen has triumphed in safety testing – while one lotion from a well-known brand has been labelled a “Don’t Buy”, according to the consumer group Which?

It comes as the UK continues to Sizzle in a heatwave, as temperatures neared 30C in many regions for three consecutive day days.   The Met Office said yesterday: “Daytime temperatures will be falling slightly over the coming days as we see increasing amounts of cloud and heavy, thundery showers developing.”

However, while temperatures may be set to fall for now, the sunscreen safety testing results will still be useful to know if the sunshine continues.  Two rounds of testing by the watchdog found Avon’s Refreshing 3-in-1 Face and Body Sun Lotion SPF30, priced at £5.75 for 150ml, “did not come close to hitting its claimed SPF30”.

Which? advised consumers to avoid the product, saying it did not offer adequate sun protection.
