'Armrest war' breaks out on plane with 'battle' over space as man spreads himself out

Flying never fails to not be a stressful experience. First, there’s the trying to get the best price for your ticket, then packing, then making sure you get to the airport on time and then coping with people in the security queue who don’t know to take their coins out of their pockets. The sitting in the airline seat and jetting off to sunnier climes is usually the easiest bit, but one annoying passenger completely dampened a woman’s spirits.

Most people would not think twice about putting the armrest down when sitting next to a stranger.

But one woman has spoken about how a man sat next to her on a flight kicked up a fuss and did not let her forget it.

She pulled the armrest down before takeoff and this innocent action led to the man making her journey a misery by getting his revenge throughout the flight.

Writing on the forum site Reddit, the anonymous user explained what happened.

She said: “Flew yesterday and ended up with some young adult male in the middle seat (I was aisle). Dude got to my row, pointed at the middle seat, and then just stood there.

“I told him he needed to move out of my way so I could get up. He scooted in, raised the armrest between his seat and mine, and plopped down.

“I sat down and lowered the armrest. He glared. I guess the armrest was constraining his body. Too bad. I paid for an entire seat.

“He then pulled a book from his backpack, reclined his seat… and spread his knees.”

She added: “I asserted my seat space but he PUSHED my left leg over and put his foot under the seat in front of me.

“I said ‘excuse me – this is my foot/under seat bag space’ (I had my smaller duffel under that seat) and he seemed surprised. He did move his foot but kept his knees spread to the max.

“My left leg suddenly became strong and anchored in line with the left side of my seat and I forced him to at least stop man-spreading into ME or my space.

“I’m female, btw, and easily fit into a regular airline seat without encroaching on others. I keep my knees and elbows to myself.”

Daily Mirror reports that since sharing details of the incident, the woman’s post has raked in over 350 comments to date of people discussing the nightmare journey.

One person commented: “A**holes do it all the time. I hate it. It’s a power play and nothing else.”

Another person said: “My wife told me this happens all the time when she flies alone for work. Guys are douchebags.”
