Argentina gathering allies for Falklands support as they turn to former British colony

A former British colony itself, India was the first country to chair the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation.

Shazia Ilmi, national spokesperson for India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, told Spanish international news agency EFE that India has given its backing for the start of talks over the Falklands’ future.

Hugo Javier Gobbi, Argentina’s ambassador to India told EFE the group will maintain awareness of the Falklands issue and show his country’s gratitude to India “for always supporting Argentina on this issue”.

Meanwhile, at a graduation ceremony for Argentinian Armed Forces officers, the country’s Minister of Defence Jorge Taiana said Buenos Aires continues to use diplomatic channels to repeat its claim that the “occupation” by the United Kingdom is “illegal and illegitimate”.
