A furious Sir Lindsay Hoyle tore into Tory MPs this lunchtime for interrupting Commons proceedings to cheer an SNP MP crossing the floor to sit with them.
Lisa Cameron announced her defection from the SNP to the Conservatives last week, in a major upset to the party’s pending conference.
Announcing her decision, she slammed the SNP Westminster group’s “toxic and bullying” treatment.
She also said she felt “fear and intimidation” after defending the teenager who was the victim of sexual advances by former group whip Patrick Grady MP.
This lunchtime she formally “crossed the floor” to join her new colleagues on the green Government benches.
She was greeted with raucous cheers from Tory MPs, which were so loud Sir Lindsay intervened to tell them off.
Shouting at Tory MPs, he said: “Can I just say to the members, a member was in the middle of asking a question, I think it’s disrespectful to your own side, you should think about what you’re doing!
“People should wait! Just because you want to cheer somebody coming in, do it at the right time; totally inappropriate!”
Ms Cameron sat between former PM Theresa May and Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross for PMQs.
Humza Yousaf has said she should do the “honourable thing” and resign, adding he is confident the SNP would win the by-election.
Ms Cameron has rejected calls for a by-election and explained she has changed her views on Scottish independence as she no longer feels the Scottish Government is being run competently.
Rishi Sunak championed his newest MP, saying he was delighted about her defection.
He said: “She is a brave and committed constituency MP. Lisa is right that we should aim to do politics better, with more empathy and less division and a dedication to always doing what we think is right.
“I look forward to working with her on the disability issues she has championed so passionately in parliament, and on the issues that really matter to her constituents in East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow.
“Her decision is a sign that we are the party for those who will make constructive, long-term decisions for a brighter future for the whole of the UK.”
