Angela Merkel ally predicts EU borders 'will shut' within the next five years

One of Angela Merkel’s former ministers has claiemd that EU borders could be shut within the next five years.

Jens Spahn, former German minister under Merkel and current deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), claimed that EU borders will eventually be closed, though he could not pinpoint the exact timeframe.

Speaking on The Pioneer podcast, he said: “The border will be closed sooner or later.

“Whether in five or 15 years, I cannot tell you. But it will happen.”

He insisted that the key question is not repatriation, but limiting irregular immigration.

He added: “If we talk about illegal migration, logically the number should be zero, because it is illegal.”

Spahn also claimed that the EU should “use physical violence to stop irregular migration movement” if necessary.

Criticising his stance, left-wing politician Clara Bunger said: “Spahn now wants gangs of thugs to beat back people seeking protection at the borders.”

She added: “This is clearly illegal and potentially criminal.”

The claims come as a number of EU countries decided to introduce border controls to manage migration challenges.

Efforts were meticulously coordinated among Poland, Czechia, and Austria last month.
