Andy Murray has risked the wrath of Taylor Swift’s fans after a sarcastic social media post about the pop star. Murray was tuning into Sunday night’s Super Bowl, with Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce playing for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Swift had flown in from Tokyo, Japan, where she is currently performing the latest leg of her Eras tour, to watch Kelce in action. And she would have been mightily impressed as the Chiefs came from behind at half-time to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in an enthralling clash.
The 34-year-old singer was at times the main attraction. Cameras often flicked to her on several occasions, with the American positioned alongside several other famous faces.
Swift has been a regular at NFL matches since September, but this was the first time she had been centre stage at the Super Bowl. Fans joked about her frequent appearances on their television screens.
Tennis star Murray was among those venting their frustration. He sarcastically congratulated Swift on winning the Super Bowl on social media platform X.
Congrats to @taylorswift13 on winning Super Bowl 58,” the Scot joked with a clapping-hands emoji. “A stunning performance.
Murray risked a pile-on from Swift’s fans, who have a reputation for going after anyone and everyone who is seen to be criticising their idol. Other users pointed out the mild irony in that Murray’s family – including wife Kim and mother Judy – often appear on television when he is playing in matches.
Swift is yet to post on social media in the aftermath of the Super Bowl. Her and her beau Kelce celebrated and shared a kiss on the pitch in a widely shared moment.
Meanwhile, Murray has promised to battle on despite enduring some woeful form on the ATP tour. He has been beaten in his first match at his last five singles’ tournaments.
The 36-year-old responded angrily to a BBC article which questioned at which point he was tarnishing his legacy by continuing to play despite long being beyond his best. Murray has struggled with form and fitness since undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2018.
“Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour,” two-time Wimbledon champion Murray wrote in reply to the article. “I’m in a terrible moment right now, I’ll give you that.
“Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently.
“I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of.”
