Americans baffled by Pot Noodle and Fray Bentos leave British shoppers in stitches

An American couple has left shoppers in stitches as they shared their baffled reaction to British favourites, including Fray Bentos pies and Pot Noodles.

Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis, who run popular Youtube channel The Magic Geekdom, uploaded a video of themselves discovering snacks such as Pot Noodles, KitKats and Lucozade at a Tesco in Honiton, Devon.

At one stage, Cara comes across a Fray Bentos tinned pie, and asks: “Is this really the normal size? When I looked at these on the internet they looked much smaller.”

The pair also encounter bitter shandy for the first time, with Cara wondering “Bitter shandy, what does that mean?”

A sign for “Frozen Lollies” also gives pause for thought as they head into the freezer section – as the US phrase for the treat is “popsicle”.

The 10-minute video has been viewed 340,000 times, with British commenters interested by the fresh perspective while offering other snack ideas – such as Mini Cheddars.

One user, named Michael, replied: “On behalf of the British I’m sorry you had to experience a ‘Fray Bentos’, hope you had your tin opener with you. They are wrong on so many levels, yet I find myself having them once in a blue moon.”

Another wrote: “As an Englishman I cannot emphasise just how much it warmed my heart when you made a beeline for the Tunnocks Caramel Wafers. The biscuit to end all biscuits…”

A user named Pat replied: “You could try Tesco’s own custard tarts – two in a pack they are to die for!”

A fourth said: “I loved watching this, I always take shopping in Tesco for granted. Was interesting to see it through someone else’s viewpoint.”

At the beginning of the video, Cara describes how they entered the shop during quiet hour.

“We heard an announcement as we walked in that we were here during quiet time. I didn’t know that they do that but they have quiet time so you can shop in peace,” she says.

The quiet hour – between 9am and 10am on Wednesdays and Saturdays – was launched last year to make the experience more peaceful for shoppers living with a disability.

Cara and Jeremy’s Magic Geekdom page, which has 44,000 subscribers, shares “unique and geeky places around the UK and beyond”.
