American tourist dies in Mallorca after tragic 12-metre fall from rocks

A 26-year-old tourist from California has reportedly died in a tragic incident after falling from rocks while holidaying in Mallorca, Spain. The unnamed man fell from a height of around 12 metres on Saturday from rocks on the beach of Cala Varques in the municipality of Manacor. The incident occurred at around 1:50pm local time on Saturday.

It is thought that the man who was on a trip with his girlfriend hit his head on the rocks instead of landing in the water, local police said.

The incident was spotted by passersby in a sailboat, who reportedly picked up the man and notified emergency services.

The Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue and a helicopter took him back to the beach, where paramedics were waiting.

He was described as being in “a very serious condition”.

Ambulances, police and maritime services rushed to the seen in desperate attempts to survive him.

But these attempts were not successful. He was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe head injuries.

A full post-mortem is now being carried out.

National Police are investigating whether this fatal incident was in fact a case of an attempted jump directly from the rocks at Cala Varques into the sea.

There have been previous accidents in the area due to this.

Locals are wary of the spot where the accident happened, noting that it is something of a deceptive danger zone due to the fact the rocks cannot be seen under the water.

A 17-year-old tourist was injured in June 2022 after jumping from a height of 15 metres into the water.

In 2021, the emergency teams made a public appeal and sent a stark warning over an increase in spinal cord injuries due to people jumping off the Cala Varques cliffs and falling onto the rocks.

Local media reported: “It is a very dangerous jump and it is common for these people to miscalculate the jump and instead of falling into the sea, they crash onto the rocks.”
