American living in UK reveals six 'random' things she's loves about the English

An American woman who moved from the US to England has shared six “cute little observations” she’s noticed about English people.

In January this year, content creator Jenna McKone moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Cambridge with her husband.

On TikTok, she shared some of the things she liked best about England and English people. It has already got over 166,000 views and hundreds of comments.

Road etiquette

Jenna said English drivers have good road etiquette and are some of the most courteous she’s ever seen.

She said she’s never seen drivers let other cars in queues by flashing hazards before coming to the country. Jenna added: “You’re just the most courteous drivers I’ve actually ever seen.”

The TikToker went on: “Maybe the 12th car lets you in [In America]. In England it’s almost always by the second car, even though your roads are really scary sometimes”.

Calling appetisers nibbles

A niche quirk Jenna loves about English people, is that we have a unique name for appetizers. She said: “That’s adorable, and now every single time we go to a pub and the menu says nibbles, my husband and I go ‘do you want some nibbles?'”

Orange egg yolk

Jenna’s next point is about food rather than people, and it’s how good English eggs are – specifically the yolks. She told viewers: “Next is how orange your egg yolk is. I know people talk about this and I know it’s not surprising from an American saying that this is one of the greatest things ever.

“But let me tell you, in the US you have to pay $12 to get the yolk as orange as it is here and it still probably isn’t as orange, and I pay £2. 50 here.”

Phone voices

Jenna said: “Next is how your voice goes three octaves higher when you’re saying goodbye on the phone. In the UK, a man with a very deep voice will be like ‘okay bye! (in a high pitched voice).

She also mentioned that she loves how it “takes a solid 10 seconds to go through the entire goodbye spiel”.

English bread

Jenna said: “The next thing is a fondness for a nice freshly baked sourdough bread. Some of my favourite brunch and coffee shops are here because of how much you love your bread.

“I could never find a good sourdough bread, even in driving distance of where I live and there’s about four that I can walk to here.”

‘English people are adaptable’

Jenna said we are “very adaptable” and don’t let the weather hold us back. She said: “I know that you guys don’t like this, I know that you don’t like your weather, but I will say you are very adaptable. Because you have to be and I realise that, but honestly it’s inspiring that all of you will be out and about no matter what.

“You’re cycling in the rain, there’s no umbrellas a lot of the time, you’re just going about your business no matter the weather and so thank you for that – I love that.”
