Ally Pally wasp killed as Masters referee flicks it off Judd Trump and stamps on it

Masters referee Ben Williams killed an Ally Pally wasp that had wreaked havoc on Judd Trump and Ali Carter’s quarter-final clash on Friday afternoon. Trump had a wasp on his waistcoat for nearly the whole of the seventh frame before Williams instructed him to stop, flicked it off and then stamped on it – much to the delight of the packed-out Alexandra Palace crowd, who broke out into cheer.

Williams was on the receiving end of one of the wasp’s wrath back in 2020 after attempting to remove it from the arena during a match between Kyren Wilson and Jack Lisowski. Wilson had been disturbed by the insect throughout the fifth frame so the esteemed referee stepped in to try and remove the winged intruder.

In haste, Williams grabbed the wasp by its wings and was stung for his efforts. “He got me!” he cried out, waving his hand in the air. Taking no chances this afternoon, Williams killed the insect before it could dig its stinger into his hand again.

Alexandra Palace has had a wasp problem for several years. During the World Darts Championship, which wrapped up a few weeks before the Masters commenced in the same venue, 16-year-old darts sensation Luke Littler and fellow arrowman Ross Smith were both stung by wasps.
