ABC'S Stephanopoulos admits new poll 'brutal' for Biden as Trump to dominate election

Joe Biden’s re-election hopes could be in tatters after a “brutal” poll revealed a majority of Americans think he lacks the “mental sharpness” needed to run the country.

The 80-year-old president of the US announced he will run for office again in the 2024 elections two weeks ago.

But a new survey has revealed that many Americans are not confident that Biden – who could reach up to 84 years of age during his next term if he wins – may not be up to the task a second time round.

The poll, released on Sunday by ABC News and the Washington Post, found that a staggering 63 percent of adult Americans do not believe that Biden has the “mental sharpness” it takes to lead the country effectively.

Meanwhile, only 32 percent believe that he does and 5 percent hold no opinion.

Reacting to the poll, ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos said: “This poll is just brutal for President Biden.”

ABC’s political director Rick this is going to deal a huge blow to Biden’s re-election hopes.

He said: “You’re seeing real weaknesses in the coalition that powered Joe Biden to the presidency in 2020.

“This race is shaping up [to be] a lot more about the incumbent president Joe Biden than it is about any of his challengers.”

These figures rocketed by nine percentage points since the same poll was conducted a year ago. Up to 54 percent of US adults said he didn’t have the mental capacity for the task in the previous poll.

Former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile said the latest results are keeping her up at night should be a huge “concern” for Biden.

She said: “It kept me up, and I thought they should wake up and look at those numbers.

“It’s sobering in the sense that the coalition that elected Joe Biden, with the historic numbers that we saw in 2020, that coalition right now is fragmented. That should concern them.”

Another poll by Ipsos Mori commissioned by Reuters found that 44 percent of Democratic voters say Biden is too old to run. But the results also showed Biden had a lead of 43 percent over Trump’s 38 percent across America.

He told NBC News: “I would caution Republicans about thinking that this [Biden’s age] is a silver bullet or even likely to be decisive in 2024. “

Donald Trump, 76, is only four years younger than Biden. The former president dethroned by Biden in 2020 is expected to be his main contender in the presidential run off next year.

Ralph Reed, a Republican strategist, has previously said that age may not necessarily be the deciding factor in the contest.

Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt told the outlet that voters won’t be concerned about the president’s age during his second term.

He said: “People don’t care about how old someone is if they feel their president is getting things done for them and making a difference in their lives.

“People don’t wake up in the morning saying Joe Biden is old. They wake up in the morning saying, ‘I need to provide for my family and feel good about my future.”
