Aachen siege LIVE: Hostages taken as police with machine guns surround German hospital

A major hospital in Germany has been sealed off amid reports of a potential hostage situation – with armed police reportedly surrounding the site. The hospital, in Aachen, a city which borders Belgium, is at the centre of a large police operation, according to international reports.

Unconfirmed reports suggest one person has been taken hostage and people have been told to avoid the area. A police spokesman told German news outlet, T Online: “There are indications that this is a possible threatening situation and people should avoid the area.

“There will be road closures and restrictions on rail traffic. Avoid the area as much as possible.” Another outlet said the area is surrounded by “heavily armed police with helmets, protective vests and submachine guns”.
