Universal Credit payments are made up of standard allowances, that all claimants will receive as a minimum, along with additional payments for elements such as raising children and covering rent. While the payments are designed to cover a person’s essentials, extra support can be given to those who are in financial difficulties.
When applying, a person will need:
- Their bank, building society or credit union account details
- An email address
- Information about their housing
- Details of their income
- Details of savings and any investments, like shares or a property that are rented out
- Details of how much they pay for childcare if they’re applying for help with childcare costs
Advances can be claimed for online or through a Jobcentre Plus work coach.
Claimants will need to explain why they need an advance, provide bank account details and verify their identity.
These advances will need to be repaid and they’ll start paying it back out of the first regular payment.
Advances must be paid back within 12 months.
