Stop and Shop shooting: 'Active shooter' at Long Island grocery store in West Hempstead, New York, police say

NEW YORK – Police were responding to reports of shots fired at a Long Island grocery story with a suspect still at large, authorities said Tuesday afternoon.

Nassau County police officer Scott Santomero confirmed to USA TODAY officers were responding to a call before noon Tuesday of possible shots fired at a Stop and Shop grocery store in West Hempstead, New York.

In a tweet, the department said a suspect had not been apprehended and advised residents to remain indoors. Officers were “canvassing the area & nearby schools have been notified to lock down & secure their buildings.”

Santomero told USA TODAY no other details were immediately available and the investigation remains active.
