‘Small steps’ to help avoid a burglary after warning issued to Britons – ‘take extra care’

New research from Churchill Home Insurance has identified that November 12 is the day of the year that Britons are most likely to be burgled. The research estimates that almost £900,000 worth of valuables could be stolen on this day alone, with a typical burglary claim costing in excess of nearly £3,000.

Analysis of home insurance claims over the past three years unveiled that the spike in burglaries could be linked to the clocks going back.

Burglaries increase by a third during the darker months according to Churchill Home Insurance.

What’s more, 37 million adults believe that their home is at greater risk of burglary during the darker months.

People living in Southampton feel the most at risk of being burgled over the winter months, followed by those living in Belfast, Brighton, Edinburgh, Leeds and Norwich.

Churchill is warning homeowners to be extra vigilant with their homes during the winter months.

Sarah Khan, Head of Churchill Home Insurance, said: “This analysis highlights a worrying trend in burglaries as the nights get longer, so we really encourage people to take extra care, especially around November 12.

“The clocks going back gives burglars plenty of opportunities to operate under the cover of darkness.

“However, there are small steps you can take to reduce the chance of a burglar targeting your property, including installing security lights, a home alarm system or a smart doorbell so you can keep an eye on your home even when you are out and about.

Homeowners should make sure ladders and hammers are out of sight to prevent burglars easy access to a property.

Churchill said: “Think like a burglar and see where the best points of entry to your home are and prevent anything happening.

“Make sure all windows and doors are locked.

“Try not to leave packaging for expensive goods outside your home. It is better to take it to a public recycling bin, as it can attract burglars and unwanted attention.”
