Sam showed off his muscular legs in a pair of black shorts, and carried his belongings in a backpack.

Russell, 57, also wore activewear as they cycled around Kalkara, which was one of the locations for Russell’s hit 2000 film Gladiator.

Sam enjoyed sight-seeing, posting a selfie from their adventures on Instagram.

‘Cycled to Fort Ricasoli today. Such an amazing place full of unbelievable history. Malta…what a gem X,’ the Englishman wrote.

Russell is in Malta for production of Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher.

Before retiring from the NRL, Sam played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, which Russell co-owns.

Before heading to Malta, the two men were in Thailand where Russell was shooting a movie called The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

Sam was working on a movie set in Bangkok with Russell.

The 32-year-old recently told Sunrise he’d landed the job after working with his A-list mentor on a film in Sydney where he earned ‘a basic wage’.

‘I would love to say that I’m in front of camera, going down that line of being a movie star, but I’m not,’ Sam said.

‘I worked in a previous movie with [Crowe] in Sydney, earning a basic wage, going back to some roots and observing the leadership and how they manage such a huge operation.’

Sam went on to say he took the job as he would like to ‘learn and see what I can pick up’ with a future going into coaching.

Last month, Russell Crowe was criticised for supporting Sam after the former Rabbitohs star confessed to being unfaithful to his ex-wife Phoebe on SAS Australia.

Underneath a selfie of Russell in Thailand, one follower wrote: ‘Shame on you all, esp you Russell Crowe. Supporting this w****r who cheated on his wife and destroyed her.’
