Piers Morgan shared a tweet which announced the news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be returning as working royals. He then asked if they would be giving up their titles.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were given the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they got married on May 19, 2018.

The original Twitter post today read: “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confirm to the Queen they will NOT be returning as working royals.”

“Presumably they will be giving up their Duke and Duchess royal titles too?” Piers wrote online in view of his 7.7 million followers.

A statement from Buckingham Palace announced the news.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.

“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

Shortly after the palace made their announcement, Meghan and Harry issued their own statement.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “As evidenced by their work over the past year, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.

“We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”

Royal editor Katie Nicholl speaking on BBC News said of the situation: “This is the final parting of the ways.

“… Yes they have lost their patronages – most people would say that is expected – he remains a prince.

“He was born a prince, that is his birth right. No one can take that away from him.”

Taking to the comments section of Piers’ post, one social media user asked: “Did Andrew give his up?”

To which, the Good Morning Britain presenter hit back: “He should have his removed too.”

“Their titles are conferred by birth, not occupation,” a second user added.

“There are thousands of people with titles who don’t work as public figures,” it continued.

“Dukes and Duchesses aren’t all royals. Why would they? Still the son of the heir to the throne,” a third person added.
