Nearly two years after its controversial release, Matt Smith reveals how he almost landed a role in the 2019 Star Wars sequel The Rise of Skywalker.

The 39-year-old actor was interviewed by Josh Horowitz on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, when he was asked about the prospective role.

While he would not clarify what role, there was speculation he could be referring to the son of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), though he would not confirm.

When asked if he ever actually shot any Star Wars scenes, Smith confirmed that the deal never went through.

‘We were close to me being in it, but then it just never quite happened. I think the thing they were thinking of me for, eventually the part became obsolete and they didn’t need it, and so I never got to be in Star Wars,’ Smith revealed.

Horowitz immediately asked if the role was going to be the son of Emperor Palpatine, but Smith paused with a smile and wouldn’t confirm.

‘I could not possibly say but it was a pretty groovy thing. It was a big story detail, like a, you know, transformative Star Wars story detail but it never quite got over the line,’ Smith added.

He went on to say the role, ‘was a big shift in the history of the franchise,’ adding, ‘There was no costume (test) there were a couple of meetings to talk about it.’

He did offer a glimmer of hope, adding, ‘Maybe I can come back, you never know.’

Still, it received mixed reviews from critics (52% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a mixed reception from fans as the film brought the ‘Skywalker era’ to a close.

LucasFilm has a number of Star Wars film projects in development, but it’s unclear when this galaxy far, far away will return to the silver screen.
