Lena Dunham and Ruth Wilson team up on Mob Queens for HBO


Lena Dunham is back in business with HBO, teaming up with Ruth Wilson for a new series Mob Queens.

The show is an adaptation of the Stitcher podcast of the same name, with Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island) also coming aboard, according to Variety.

Wilson will star in the series and serve as executive producer, while Dunham and Lehane will co-write and executive produce, with Dunham also directing.

The series will follow the life of Anna Genovese (Wilson), the second wife of infamous Mafia leader Vito Genovese of the Genovese crime family.

She was also well-known as a fixture in the Village’s drag bar scene in the 1930s, running a number of well-known clubs.

Anna reached a new level of infamy when she left her husband in 1950, ultimately breaking the rules of the Sicilian mafia, a.k.a. Cosa Nostra, by revealing her husband’s illegal criminal dealings in the divorce proceedings.

She passed away in 1982 after suffering a serious stroke, surrounded by her lover, Jackie, daughter Marie, and granddaughter, Mia.

The Mob Queens podcasts debuted in 2019, hosted by writers Jessica Bendiger and Michael Seligman.

The writers had researched Anna for four years, after Seligman discovered a cache of letters written by Genovese while cleaning out the storage unit of an older friend who had passed away.

Michael P. Cohen of Good Thing Going will also executive produce with Dunham, Wilson and Lehane.

Also executive producing are Ryan Selzer of Lady Lazarus, Stitcher, Animal Kingdom, and podcast hosts Michael Seligman and Jessica Bendinger.  

Wilson currently stars on HBO’s His Dark Materials, which is in production on its third and final season.

Dunham is best known for creating the hit HBO series Girls, which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017.

She also created HBO’s Camping and, most recently she wrote an episode of Genera+ion, which debuted on HBO Max in June.

Lehane is a novelist and screenwriter best known for his books Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island, while also writing on The Outsider and Mr. Mercedes.
