In 2017, John told ABC of his weight loss: ‘In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack or whatever and just go back to my old habits.

‘This time I wanted to do it slowly. Move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore.’

As part of his lifestyle overhaul, the actor ditched alcohol and in 2018 told AARP: ‘It was basically just portion control and “I don’t need it.” I was just shoving everything into my mouth.’

John also hired a personal trainer, Mackie Shilstone and revealed his motivation for losing weight.

He told People in 2010: ‘It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next … I wanted to live life better.’

In 2016, the star told Howard Stern: ‘I took it slow. I just wanted to change my lifestyle’ and admitted of his new way of living: ‘It’s an ongoing process for the rest of my life.

‘You look in the mirror everyday and go, “I gotta deal with this the rest of the day, I gotta deal with this schmuck?”.’
