‘I was hammered!’ Freddie Flintoff reveals how his cricket career ending coincided with all-night bender with Kasabian and Oasis as the star insists he’s happier now he’s sober

He was once almost as well known for his partying ways as he was for his cricketing skills.

And, Freddie Flintoff, 43, has revealed how his cricket career ending coincided with an all-night bender with Kasabian and Oasis.

The star – who is dad to Holly, 17, Corey, 15, Rocky, 13, and Preston, one – has also insisted that he’s happier now he’s sober.

In 2009, Freddie went London for a medical appointment to assess a knee injury, and popped into The Landmark hotel for a quiet drink the night before.

But, after running into Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno and Tom Meighan, as well as Oasis, the evening became a raucous affair.

Freddie told The Sun: ‘The night was certainly wild, like something you would imagine in the early Seventies with the Rolling Stones.

‘Everyone was hammered, the staff were trying to calm it down, guests were complaining. Looking back, part of me was celebrating a great Test match and part wanted to forget about my knee and let off steam.’

After getting to bed at 6am after a night of boozing, Freddie dragged himself to his 8am knee appointment, stinking of alcohol.

The doctor told the cricket star that he needed an operation straight away, and if he continued to play the rest of the Ashes his knee may never repair.

Freddie recalled: ‘I was hammered and my career was ending.’

Ultimately, the sportsman decided to finish the series but retired from Test cricket that year and from other forms of the game in 2010.

Freddie now admits he believes playing the rest of the Ashes that year effectively cut short his career by several years, because of the toll it took on him.

The cricketer insisted that he’s now happier and healthier after ditching alcohol, saying: ‘I was boozing to try to change the way I felt and that’s when it became a problem. If I latched on, I would get into drinking, and not just for one session. It would go on for weeks and that couldn’t continue.’

In 2007 Freddie was sacked as England’s vice-captain after an infamous incident wherein he capsized a pedalo after a late night on the town.

In his 2009 autobiography Ashes To Ashes the cricketer details some of his controversial moments, like arriving to practice ‘smelling of booze’ and the pressure he faced in 2006.

‘It was obvious I was struggling and what my state of mind was. They could see how difficult I was finding leading England, and what it was doing to me on and off the field,’ he wrote.
