Disney’s Encanto will go from theaters to Disney Plus streaming service in less than a month… arriving on Christmas Eve


Disney’s new animated film Encanto debuted in theaters on Wednesday, just in time for the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Some may be surprised to learn that the animated film will be available on the Disney Plus streaming service quicker than expected.

Disney released a list of movies and TV shows that will debut on the Disney Plus streaming service in December on Tuesday, with Encanto confirmed to arrive on Christmas Eve, December 24.

Unlike some Disney titles, which are available through Premier Access for an additional fee on top of the Disney Plus subscription, Encanto will be available for all Disney Plus subscribers for no extra fee.

Also arriving on Christmas Eve on Disney Plus is NatGeo’s King Tut In Color and Lost Tombs of the Great Pyramid. 

Encanto’s December 24 Disney Plus premiere was first reported by Collider in September, which revealed that the animated film’s 30-day theatrical window is the smallest for their recent titles.

Disney is typically placing at least a 45-day theatrical window for new films such as The Last Duel, Ron’s Gone Wrong, Eternals, West Side Story and The King’s Man.

The Last Duel is already set for its Disney Plus debut on December 1, while Ron’s Gone Wrong arrives December 15.

No date has been given for Eternals, though it’s possible that could have a 70-day theatrical window like the previous Marvel Studios superhero movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi debuted in theaters on September 3 before its Disney Plus debut on November 12, the two-year anniversary of the streaming service.

Encanto follows a young Colombian girl named Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz), who comes from quite the special family.

While every member of her family has some sort magical power, Mirabel does not, which confuses and frustrates her.

What she lacks in magic she gains in emotion and being empathetic, and she may be her family’s best hope when their land called Encanto is threatened.

The voice cast also includes John Leguizamo, Wilmer Valderrama, Maluma and Adassa, to name a few.

Lin-Manuel Miranda also provided brand new original music for the animated film.
