Diary Of A Wimpy Kid animated sequel Rodrick Rules is coming to Disney+ in 2022


Disney+ announced that Rodrick Rules – a sequel to its upcoming animated film Diary Of A Wimpy Kid – is coming in 2022.

On Friday, the studio revealed that it had set the second installment of its new animated Diary Of A Wimpy Kid franchise as part of its Disney+ Day celebration.  

Disney+ unveiled the first poster for the movie on its official Twitter page along with the caption: ‘The rules are simple: #RodrickRules. A new animated adventure from the Diary of a #WimpyKid franchise, is coming to #DisneyPlus. #DisneyPlusDay.’

The streaming platform also announced that the first film in the animated franchise will debut on December 3.

Directed by Swinton Scott, the voice cast includes Brady Noon, Ethan William Childress and Chris Diamantopoulos.  

In 2010, Fox released the live-action/animated adaptation of the first book in Jeff Kinney’s mega-hit Diary of a Wimpy Kid graphic novel series, which was launched in 2007.

Kinney is serving as writer and producer for all of the new Disney+ animated movies. 

Diary of a Wimpy Kid follows a weakling middle-schooler named Greg Heffley who illustrates and writes about his daily life in a diary.

The series centers on Greg’s adventures along with those of his best friend Rowley and aggressive older brother Rodrick.

Fox went on to release the sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, which was based on Kinney’s follow-up book of the same name, in 2011.

Two additional sequels Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Long Haul were released in 2014 and 2017.

The series starred Zachary Gordon (Greg), Robert Capron (Rowley) Devon Bostick (Rodrick) and Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn as Greg’s parents Susan and Frank.

Chloë Grace Moretz also starred as Angie Steadman, a seventh grader who works for the school’s newspaper. Moretz’s character does not appear in the novel series.

Disney acquired the rights to Kinney’s work after its merger with Fox in 2019.
