‘I’m a pianist, I need my finger back’: Blur’s Damon Albarn reveals he ‘completely severed’ his finger off in a blender while making pesto

He’s known for the hit tracks Girls & Boys, Song 2, and Beetlebum.

But Damon Albarn thought his days of tinkling the ivories could be up last Christmas when he ‘completely severed’ his finger off while making pesto in a blender.

‘I said: “I’m a pianist, I need my finger back,”‘ the Blur frontman, 53, who was told by staff at St Mary’s Hospital there was nothing they could do for him, recalled.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Damon explained: ‘I actually cut my finger off last Christmas Eve.

‘I was making a pesto, and I had a hand blender and I just made it. I thought, “Hmm, that looks good.

Eager to try his pasta sauce, Damon put his hand in the blender rather than testing it from the bowl.

He continued: I put it in, pressed the button. Then I had to pull it out, and it was completely severed.’

Damon was then rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington where staff told the musician there was nothing they could do for him.

Panic stricken at the thought of losing his finger forever, Damon told the staff: ‘I said, “I’m a pianist, I need my finger back”.

‘Anyway, a fantastic surgeon was found on Christmas Day, and on Boxing day, I got it sewed back on.’

The shocking anecdote comes as Damon has released his latest solo album titled The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows.

However,  Damon hinted at a possible Blur reunion during an interview in July.

Although the London-based band have never formally split, they have been on a break since The Magic Whip tour in 2015, where they promoted their eighth album.

The musician admitted that despite being very busy, nothing is ruled out – but doesn’t want to ‘foist’ the reunion on anyone unnecessarily.

He told NME: ‘When it happens, I’ll be made up. When it’s wanted, I’ll do it.’

The singer-songwriter, who came onto the music scene in 1998 when Blur was formed, is also a member of alternative band Gorillaz.

Their first self-titled record, released in 2001, reached number 3 on the UK charts and was so successful it earned them a Guinness Book of World Record Entry for ‘most successful virtual band’.
